It is quite difficult to define Germany over the centuries. There was the Holy Roman Empire which emerged during the Middle Ages and consisted of several sovereign territories. On the Congress of Vienna the European leaders founded the German Confederation in 1815. During the long 19th century the German Empire was established in Versailles. Then, after the two World Wars and the Weimar Republik, the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949.
